Make FUNtastic Party Sandwiches for Big & Little Kids

Make any casual meal into a party with these fun and unique sandwiches. Both kids and adults will have fun making and eating these creations and what better way to get kids to eat more veggies than to make them a fun sandwich like these.  You can make a fun party sandwich to fit any theme.  Here we show you how to make some really creative sandwiches, starting with this cute Pirate.

Our preference is to use thin slices of bread and you can choose white or whole wheat.  Even though we always eat whole wheat bread on a normal basis, for these we like the contrast of the white bread and the colorful vegetables.  Note that you can get creative yourself and make any fun food substitution that works.  Change veggies, add grapes or walnuts ... lots of options for food fun!

For the Pirate:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • Red pepper
  • Olive slices
  • Cucumber
  • Radish slice
  • Chives
  • Orange nose (carrot, orange pepper or cheese)
  • Sandwich filling of choice (turkey, cheese, ham etc.)

Cut slices of bread into circles with a sharp knife.  Fill sandwich with a combination of your favorite ingredients, such as ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, turkey and avocado slices.  If it is for a child's party, try to choose ingredients that kids will be most likely to eat.

Now, cut a large red pepper slice to make the bandana of the pirate.  Cut two little pieces to make the "ties".  Add eyes, nose, mouth and ears, as shown.  Use olive slices without pimentos for earrings.

This is a great sandwich for any pirate themed party.  If you want, you can choose to set out all the ingredients and let each little pirate make his own sandwich.  Just provide a sample sandwich so they have an idea of what theirs should look like.

This is a cute sandwich to make for a Jungle-themed party or any wildlife type of luncheon.  But any child would love to have this little elephant for lunch.  He’s quite easy to make and few ingredients are needed.

For the Elephant:

  • 2 slices Pumpernickel bread

  • 2 slices White bread

  • Orange pepper

  • Ham slice

  • Chives

  • Green grape

  • Cheese for eyes

  • Sandwich filling

Put pumpernickel bread slices together and then cut out a large circle.  We used a glass with a large opening to cut out our round or if you have a large round cutter that would work also.  Set white bread slices together and then cut two large ears for the elephant.  Fill sandwiches with desired filling and arrange on the plate.  Ham and cheese work well for this sandwich, as you will be adding a layer of ham on top of the ears.

From a slice of ham, cut two slightly smaller ears that will rest on top of the “ear” sandwich sections.  Cut two long slices of orange pepper from the sides of your pepper.  Make the long, fat part of the trunk from one piece and then cut a curved “c” shape that will form the lower part of the trunk.  Place the curved section on the plate, beneath the upper part of the trunk.

Cut two slices from the grape for eyes and then cut smaller circles from a white food, such as cheese, apple or zucchini.  Use whatever you have on hand.  Cut small stems of chives to place in the elephant’s trunk, to look as though he is eating.

For the Flag:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • Red pepper slices
  • Pickle slice to make Star
  • Sandwich filling of choice

Cut bread slices into a large rectangle, removing crusts.  Fill with sandwich filling of your choice.  Cut red pepper slices and arrange on top of sandwich, as shown.  Cut out a star from a pick slice or other colorful veggie slice.  Wallah, a fun and patriotic sandwich!

For the Princess:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • Yellow pepper
  • Orange pepper
  • Snap pea
  • Olive slices
  • Snippet of green for mouth
  • Snippet of red for nose
  • Tiny corns slices for crown
  • Sandwich filling of choice

Cut slices of bread into a large circle and fill with sandwich filling of your choice. Cut two large triangular pieces from yellow pepper for princess hair.  Using the orange pepper, cut out a large crown and set all pieices in place.  You may need to place a "support" piece of pepper beneath the crown to keep it steady. Use the green snap pea for the princess collar and then cut slices of olives, carrots, little corns etc to finish the Princess.  Little girls will love this sandwich and they may even want to make their own.

For the Rocketship:

  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 slice whole wheat bread
  • Radish
  • Cheese slice
  • Assorted pepper slices
  • Cucumber slice
  • Cheese for star
  • Sandwich filling of your choice

Cut bread slices into a rocket shape from white bread.  Fill with sandwich filling of your choice.  Ham & cheese?  Turkey and mayo?  Cut rocketship legs from whole wheat bread.  Cut cheese slice legs and orange pepper legs to add to the top of the whole wheat legs.  Cut three thin radish slices to add for rocketship windows.  Make flames beneath rocketship from yellow pepper.  To finish off, cut a star from a cheese slice or orange pepper.  Make a "moon" slice from cucumber.  This will delight any man in your life!
