DIY snowflakesHow to Make a Paper Snowflake

Nothing says winter better than Snowflakes.  Even if there isn’t any snow on the ground or in the air, snowflakes give a feeling of happiness and adventure.

And making paper snowflakes carries on such an old tradition.  Did you make these when you were a kid?  They’re beautiful, happy little snips of paper that you can basically make for free.  We like making these every Christmas season to either hang on a tree or make a pretty garland of greens and snowflakes.  They are super easy to make and kids love this winter project.

Depending on how you fold and cut your paper, you can end up making an absolute blizzard of snowflakes, each and every one different.  Provided below are intstructions for making a six-pointed snowflake.  But do be adventuresome and try some of your own folding techniques to see what you can come up with.

Paper Snowflake Instructions

  • Plain white paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  1. Using regular printer or copy paper, draw lines to make four 4″ squares on one piece of paper and then a 6″ square on a second piece of paper.  This will enable you to find out if you want to make more of one size or the other.  As long as you start with a square, you can use any size square to start a snowflake.
  2. Fold your square in half diagonally.
  3. Fold in half again.
  4. Now, fold the existing triangle into thirds, as shown.  It works best to fold the side with open edges first.  If need be, draw light pencil lines to divide the triangle into thirds, so you can see where to fold the first section.
  5. Fold the other third over the first.
  6. Cut off the two “tails”.  Try some snowflakes by cutting straight across the tails.  Try others by making an angled cut (to make more pointed tips).  See the Snowflake progression image for angle cut.
  7. Cut out tiny areas of your folded paper.  Experiment with triangle cuts, curvy cuts and long, skinny cuts.  Each snowflake will be different and it is always a surprise!
  8. Unfold the snowflake gently.  Enjoy!
