Spaghetti Boats for Kids dinner

Is spaghetti one of your basic go-to dinners?  Just like pizza, this is one of the kids most requested meals.  Well, we get a little tired of the same old, same old, so Kristin and I came up with a fun new way to serve spaghetti … and it’s a great idea for lunch or dinner.

I mean, really … how many times have you seen a kid smear his spaghetti onto bread or a roll?  Well, we found the perfect, fun solution to actually serving the spaghetti.  Last week, we bought some semi-crusty, heat and serve type of rolls.  We prefer the type that doesn’t have to be baked but can be warmed in the oven if desired.  The kids were thrilled with this fun new way to serve their spaghetti and it was less messy than usual.

How did we make these little hand-held spaghetti boats?  Actually, they are quite simple to make.  Just cut into the top of the roll with a sharp serrated knife, basically cutting a rectangle.  Don’t cut all the way through the roll, of course.  Once the shape is cut, then gently scoop out the insides.  These can be used in another recipe or just served with dinner.

Make your normal spaghetti and sauce.  We like to doctor store-bought Ragu with onions and garlic, adding some extra onions, garlic, thyme, oregano and a bit of sugar.  Once everything is cooked, put some sauce over a large helping of spaghetti and lightly toss together.  Add grated Parmesan cheese to the tops.  Serve with a side salad, olives or cold veggie slices.

These little spaghetti boats are a perfect party food and great to take on a picnic for a nice change of pace.  It’s a food that most kids will eat, so it is a fun idea for a kid’s pool party too.

Make meals more fun by adding a little unexpected twist.
