E is for Ethics Book Giveaway - the Perfect Book to Help Teach Your Child Values

Posted in

If you have been searching for the perfect book to help teach your children good moral values, search no longer.  E is for Ethics: How to Talk to Kids About Morals, Values, and What Matters Most, by Ian James Corlett, is designed to be read out loud and discussed as a family.  It is geared toward children ten and younger.  We are giving away 3 books in this Book Giveaway contest!

My first impression when I heard the title was rather ho-hum, but I absolutely love this book!  With 26 little "read-aloud" stories that are short and sweet, and a Questions and Discussion page following each Value, it is a perfect book for parents to read and teach their kids.  Two characters, Elliott & Lucy, face an ethical situation in each little story.  Kindness, Respect, Honesty, Forgiveness, Loyalty, Gratitude and 20 more such values cover every imaginable moral scenario ... so you, as parents, won't even have to think of them yourselves.

The author, Ian Corlett, is a veteran of children's television programming who has worked for hit shows like the Adventures of Paddington Bear, Rolie Polie Olie, and Rainbow Fish.  He knows what appeals to children and, in fact, E is for Ethics was inspired by Ian Corlett's personal family experience.  When his children were small, he and his wife would have a weekly discussion called "Family Fun Time."  How Perfect!

Too Cute Tote for Tots - Little Packrats Backpacks

Posted in

This past week I was in passing time before catching my cab to the airport after a whirlwind trip to NYC. I stopped by an adorable childrens shop called Catfish Greetings on Mulberry Street in NoLita and found an adorable backpack for my daughter. I had never seen these backpacks before and fell in love with one emblazoned with a friendly green alien. The backpack is designed by a company called Little Packrats. The great thing about these backpacks is that they are sized small for toddlers and are square shaped to fit in cubbies at school. Wow, what a great idea! Aren't these animal designs just too cute? There is also a large bead on the zipper which makes it easy for little hands to grasp. The backpack measures 9″ × 9″ × 3″ and features an adjustable webbing straps and top carry handle.

BPA free Stainless Steel Kids Drinking Cups and Silikids Glasses

Posted in

Have you been looking for kids drinking cups that don't pose a health risk to your children? Here at Ziggity Zoom we have been searching for safe alternatives to plastic cups and kids dinnerware.  If you have been on the lookout also, you will notice that there hasn't been much to choose from.  But we're happy to report about two safe alternatives for your kids rather than the plastic cups they might have been drinking from, containing BPA.

Ecococoon, founded by a Brisbane mother, Libby Versace, who was concerned about the widespread use of BPA in kids drinking cups, offers a set of cups made from food grade stainless steel.   They are sold in a set of six brightly colored cups, outer painted with lead free eco-paint.  Fun, kid-friendly images grace the cups.  Boys  and girls sets are offered and also a Favorite Things set with images below.

  • Green dinosaur
  • Light blue surfboard
  • Royal blue football
  • Ruby red strawberry
  • Hot pink ice cream
  • Purple pony

Our second selection is a great glass for young children that comes with a silicone sleeve from Silikids. This is a great new alternative from the plastic "glasses" that abound for children.  This silicon-covered glass is easy to hold and is a great protection in the event of an accident.

I'm sure in the future there will be many more options, as manufacturers get the message, but for now we highly recommend these two products.

Felt Toys for Rainy Day Fun

Posted in

I've been searching for some felt play sets for my preschool age daughter. In particular an ABC set. She can now recite the alphabet, but cannot yet identify each letter. So I thought a set of sturdy felt letters, like these made in Germany by Parkhaus ($50 at Eli Phant) might be a good solution. Non plastic and soft, they can be attached to a felt board or simply laid out on a table.

Reuseable felt projects are perfect for rainy day indoor activities. I've also found a few other felt toys that she might enjoy as well.  Most every little girl of preschool age loves a princess, so the FeltTales Pretty Princess Storyboard ($19.95 at Amazon.com) would be perfect for travel or to keep her occupied on a rainy day. The set includes a felt board, carry handle and 20 felt pieces.

For toddlers who can't get enough trucks, fire engines and trains, a Precut Transportation Felt Set ($12.95 at Nasco.com).The set includes 39 precut pieces and is appropriate for ages 3-6. For the Kindergarten set, the Felt Friends Bird and Bear by Alex Toys ($7.95 at RoseToys.com) includes everything needed to sew adorable felt puppets.

Amazingly Realistic Baby Sculptures & Dolls by Camille Allen

Posted in

Amazing.  These are the most real-looking baby sculptures we have ever seen and we couldn't wait to share them with everyone.  Finely crafted from clay or resin, these incredible "babies" are created by Camille Allen, from British Columbia, Canada.  And, unbelieveably, she is just 28 years old with no children of her own just yet.

Camille works in a large, bright studio in an old building that was built in 1916, with the ocean out the window and the mountains in the background.  It's filled with dolls, doll parts and dolls in progress.  The tiny babies are crafted with baby wrinkles and even fingernails.  These little treasures are very collectible and Camille limits each baby to a limited number, making them very collectible.

All babies range in price but the limited editions start at about $99 and go up from there.  One of a kind babies are from $300 up to $4000.  To see more of these incredible babies go to Camille's website.
