Leaf and Pattern Kids Art Project

A fun and easy art drawing project from art teacher Kathy Barbro.

Leaves with Lines

This is a good exercise for those small motor skills. I’ve found students have a lot of fun just losing themselves in their patterns.

1. Cardboard templates of leaves may help young artists get started, but drawing their own is always best. Students draw at least two of their favorite leaves, and then draw the veins inside. The veins should divide the leaf up into large sections.

2. Sharpie markers are used to trace all the lines. Students fill all the areas with patterns, changing whenever they got to a new section.

3. When complete, the leaves are traced with what I call “energy lines” around the outside until the paper was filled. I emphasized throughout the project that nothing was to be filled in. I think it made the students think more. . . and made my markers last longer too.

Mixed Media Seahorse Art Project for Kids

A new art project for kids by art teacher, Kathy Barbro.

Kinders in my district learn about “amazing animals” around this time of year.That’s the perfect time for a seahorse watercolor resist project. A reading of the “Mister Seahorse” book by Eric Carle will show all the amazing ways fish take care of their young, and a direct draw seahorse with crayons and watercolor will show off all they have learned.

1. Students draw their seahorses as shown on the diagram.

2. The art is traced with a marker.

3. The seahorse is colored heavily with crayons.

4. White crayon is used to make waves and bubbles.

5. The paper is covered with blue watercolor paint.

Self Portrait Art Project for Kids

I’d been looking for a different approach to self-portraits for a back-to-school project. I wanted something that would ask the students to see themselves in a new way, and create a colorful display that I knew the teachers would appreciate for their classrooms. Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser has an amazing life story, along with a very appealing style of abstract drawing. Click here to read more about him.

1. Start with a 9″ x 12″ paper, and trace the width of a ruler around the outside edges in pencil. Add another line about 1/4″ away to make a narrow inner border.

2. Draw a very large circle that almost touches the top border and does touch the left and right. Wobbly circles are welcome! Shoulders may be straight or angled.

Eyes are drawn by starting with a center dot, and then the football shapes that extend and touch the outside edge. Hair must be simple, simple, simple, using as few lines as possible. Names are drawn in block letters in the bottom border.
3. When the drawing is done, all lines are traced with a thin black marker.
4. Everything is colored in heavily with some good colored pencils. This sample is down Prismacolors.
