This is a fun activity for the holidays and kids, of course, love playing with food. Made only from marshmallows and pretzel sticks, this cute little Christmas Igloo makes a fun holiday centerpiece and you can eat it afterwards.
Items needed:
- 1 Large bag Large marshmallows
- Pretzel sticks
- Red sugar crystals for floor of Igloo (optional)
- Mini Candycanes for fence (optional)
* Toothpicks can be used instead of pretzel sticks, but do not break in half, as they may not be visible when Igloo is taken apart and someone eats the marshmallows.
** Icing could also be utilized to “glue” the marshmellows together, similar to a gingerbread house.
Instructions:
- Choose plate or stiff foam to build Igloo on.
- Arrange bottom layer of marshmallows on plate, leaving room for an opening to igloo in front.
- We used whole marshmallows for the main Igloo and half marshmallows for the doorway. But you could opt to build with half marshmallows, allowing the sticky parts to hold your igloo together.
- For assembling with pretzels, break pretzel sticks in half and then push into a marshmallow. Push next marshmallow onto the other side of the pretzel and continue to build around this way. Off set each row of marshmallows as you build upwards, staggering the marshmallows, moving each row in toward the center of the igloo as you go. Do three rows in this manner and then start filling in the top of your igloo.
- For Door opening, cut marshmallows in half and build one on top of the other, forming an arch as you go. Since marshmallows will be sticky this is not too difficult.
- To make a fence around the igloo, just alternate a plain marshmallow next to a marshmallow that you have pushed a little candy can into and this will form your fence.
- Sprinkle red sugar crystals on the floor of your igloo to complete the Christmas Igloo look.
