Dyeing Eggs for Easter
Does your family dye Easter eggs? Is it a tradition at your house? It has always been something that we have done every Easter since I can remember when. We have tried all sorts of techniques for some fun and, sometimes, unexpected results. Here are a few of our suggestions.
Solid Color Eggs – Use pre-packaged Easter egg dye kits or mix your own solution of 1 cup warm water, 1 Tablespoon vinegar and a few drops of food coloring.
Marbelized Eggs – Start with a solid colored egg, then make a color batch a shade darker and mix in a small amount of olive oil. Do this in a shallow bowl. Roll egg around once and then take out of solution and pat dry.
White Designed Eggs – You can get nice white designs on your eggs by using either a wax crayon, drawing on the egg before putting into the color bath or use masking tape cut into shapes or random tears. Apply masking tape prior to coloring.
Funky Colored Eggs – Try using permanent markers to add fun stipes, dots or other random shapes. You can use markers before coloring or after coloring to get different effect.
Back to Nature Eggs – For a more subdued color for your eggs, try dyeing in various pots of hot water, using natural ingredients. You can get some wonderful colors from grass, onion skins, red beets, carrots, blueberries, tea, coffee and other food items.
